IID Challenge Grants Program
UNIID-SEA launched a Research Grants Program to support the development and implementation of action-research projects that will facilitate deeper understanding and appreciation of IID as a development concept and approach, and build the necessary research capacities to promote and mainstream IID in universities and research councils in SEA.
The program aimed to award grants up to USD 15,730 in each country to support action researches that offer innovative solutions to poverty and exclusion issues faced by a partner community. The First Call for Proposals was released in July 2012. Four research proposals were approved for funding for Year 1.
1. Cross-national Survey on University and Research Council Roles in Inclusive Development and Innovation in SEA
A baseline survey of universities and councils coordinated by Noviscape Consulting Group under Dr. Pun-Arj Chairatana that aims to review the current status of universities and RCs in terms of doing IID, and of organizational recognition and understanding of IID in five countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam. To be done are a) mapping of current IID research and academic activities in the region; b) identification of key drivers, barriers and incentives for these institutions to pursue IID activities, and c) develop recommendations for the future path of IID field-building and the development of a community of excellence in the region.
2. Regional Coordination Mechanism for Universities and Councils in Inclusive Development: The Case of Southeast Asia Innovation Systems
A research study led by Dr. Ng Boon Kwee of the University of Malaya that aimed to identify existing regional coordination mechanisms and institutions for IID in SEA, and identify means for the more effective use of such mechanisms to foster IID in the target countries: Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia. Regional coordination bodies in SEA such as the ASEAN University Network, SEAMEO-RIHED and ASIAHORCS were engaged in this study.
3. Enhancing University Service-Learning engagements that promote Innovation for Inclusive Development: A Case Study of the Ateneo de Manila Loyola Schools, Philippines
This research, led by Leland de la Cruz of the Development Studies Program, study will document and assess the service-learning programs of the Loyola Schools that promote innovation for inclusive development. This project seeks to look into the impact of the service-learning programs of the Loyola Schools on informal settings and student formation.
4. Curriculum Design and Development of an IID-Oriented Course for Undergraduate Students, Vietnam
Vietnam, led by Dr. Nguyen Luu Bao Doan of Hoa Sen University, Ho Chi Minh. This research aimed to design and develop a course on IID for undergraduate students of Hoa Sen University in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. The overall objective for the course will be to raise the awareness on IID among faculty, students and in the long-run, the general public via different curricular activities. The project will 1) develop relevant coursework, composed of reading materials, case studies, and other activities, 2) map the needs and gaps in the understanding and practice of IID in Vietnam, and 3) engage the university in teaching IID-oriented courses and doing research in this field.
